BOSNIAN BUREK - One and Only Meat Pie in Bosnia

This favorite Bosnian and Balkan meat dish with fillo/phyllo (dough) is a traditional lunch or dinner for many in Bosnia. To cut prep time, use fillo/phyllo (dough) to make this tasty dish in multiple layers topped with creamy and buttery sauce. Serve it with a cup of kefir or a side of sauerkraut.  Prijatno/Dobar Tek = Enjoy Your Meal!

  • Baking(Tin Foil) Pan Size 9x13
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Sauce Pot

  • 1 Packet Fillo or Phyllo (dough)
  • 1 Pound Ground Beef
  • Onion 1 (Medium or Large size)
  • 1 Tablespoon Black Pepper
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Oil

  • 1 Tablespoon Sumac

Sauce (Optional)  
  • 2 Tablespoons Sour Cream
  • 1 Tablespoon Ghee (clarified butter) or Butter 
  • 1/2 cup Milk

  1. In oiled pan place 2 layers of Phillo dough and spread the mixture of meat and minced onion mixture prepared with spices as on a chess board, repeat layers.
  2. Finish the pie layers with remaining 2-3 layers of Phillo dough and oil the top
  3. After baking pour from sauce pan mixture of melted and stirred sour cream and ghee or butter and broil for 1-2 minutes.

After baking covered with foil for 20 minutes at 400 °F, you can remove foil and broil it till golden brown color.
